My fried green tomato BLT sandwich takes an awesome American sandwich and makes it just a little bit awesomer. Summer’s not complete until you’ve had one!

I’ve been dreaming about this fried green tomato BLT sandwich for a while now. BLTs are my standing order in the summer and I truly believe there is something magical about the combination. Going on the theory that even magical things can be improved upon, I’d like to introduce the fried green tomato BLT. Possibly the best summer sandwich ever dreamed up. Did I mention it comes with a tangy remoulade mayo?

where to get green tomatoes
Gardeners know all about green tomatoes. They’re the tomatoes that, usually towards the end of the growing season, are on the vine but don’t have time to ripen. They’re super hard and tart, and not good for much except…frying! Fried green tomatoes are famous for their perfect combination of tangy, juicy interior and crispy coating. But what if you don’t have a garden, then what?
I say feel free to use any firm under-ripe tomato you like for frying. The firm texture is important so that the tomatoes don’t get mushy when fried.
fry ’em up!
- Thickly slice your green tomatoes.
- Dunk into buttermilk.
- Dredge in your seasoned cornmeal/flour mixture.
- Shallow fry in a skillet until golden and crispy.
- Drain on paper towels.
to toast, or not to toast?
I say toasted bread is a BLT must for a few good reasons: the crunchy texture. The toasty flavor. And the way toasted bread soaks in the remoulade mayo without getting mushy. But that’s just my opinion, you do you.
layer up your fried green tomato BLT
- Toast your bread.
- Salther both top and bottom slices with remoulade mayo.
- Place lettuce on the bottom slice.
- Top with fried green tomatoes, you will likely need 2 per sandwich.
- Next comes a layer of crispy bacon.
- Finish with the second slice of toast.

My New favorite way to make BLT’s!!! Everyone loved it. We are lucky enough to have a farm that takes their heirloom corn they grow just for cornmeal. I get the very fine mill, no flour needed for the tomatoes. Thank you for sharing!
I’d love to get my hands on some of that cornmeal, how lucky you are!
