Blood Orangeade is a beautiful and refreshing homemade soda made without sugar or anything artificial ~ celebrate the best of citrus season with this gorgeous healthy drink!

Are there any of you out there who’ve managed to make it all the way to March without tasting a blood orange? I hope not, but just in case you’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about, you’re in for a real treat. It isn’t just about the unusual color with this orange. The flavor is completely unique, too. It has a hint of raspberry and a touch of sweet floral, and it’s really very enticing.
In fact, I think the best way to enjoy a blood orange, especially for the first time, is in a beverage, where you can get the full impact of the flavor. This seems like a summery drink, I know, but once summer rolls around blood oranges will be long gone. Buy a few and try this simple Blood Orangeade before citrus season is officially over.

Blood oranges are a little less juicy than regular oranges and tangerines, but the color and flavor of the juice is intense, so a little goes a long way. They’re a little sweeter than regular oranges, too, so you don’t need to add sugar.

For a different approach, you can make ice cubes out of the juice, and then top them with the sparkling water. You’ll get an instant all natural blood orange soda, and it’s a good way to preserve some of this precious juice a little longer past the season.

Now that you’re acquainted with blood oranges, you need to try my Blood Orange Jam ~ it’s a truly unique experience! And once you’ve got a batch of the jam, you’ve got the makings for Blood Orange Crumble Bars. I’ll have you hooked in no time 🙂

Of course it’s entirely your own business if you want to add some white wine, rum or vodka to your Blood Orangeade, and you can substitute blood orange juice for other fruits in most classic cocktails.

Simply beautiful! Love that gorgeous color!
Thanks Asmita!
Love love love blood oranges! I made some blood orange curd last week and it was gone in two days. Those juice ice cubes are a fantastic idea, Sue.
Well, I haven’t had any blood oranges this season, but that’s because I’ve been eating the ordinary oranges off our backyard tree instead. Still! I should go get some before they’re gone, because this juice sounds fabulous. 🙂
Sue my hand is raised. I have not had one but maybe I get extra points for having two in my vege/fruit drawer! I love the juice cubes – so pretty and gorgeous color.
the color is amazing! how beautiful and creative with such a wonderful fruit:)
I like this blood orange juice ice cube approach. I feel like that will make all my beverages happier.
I’ve been wanting to make those for the longest time…I wonder how well they would keep in the freezer, I’m thinking of stocking up!
We got a soda stream for an engagement gift and we absolutely love it (it was the first thing on our registry). I’m always looking for new things to mix with the seltzer — I’m lovin’ those juice cubes. Perfect.
I’m really tempted to get one of those machines!
I have managed to make it to March without tasting a blood orange and this is proof that I missing something really good. This looks amazing!

There are still some around, and I predict you’ll flip over them.
Looks yummy. I’ve always thought that “blood orange” is a most unfortunate name. It just isn’t appealing and that’s too bad because as you say, it has a wonderful flavor.
I’ve never thought about that…but I can see how the name would put some people off. I hope you try one anyway, Amy, I think you’ll be glad you did.
How creative, love the ice cubes!
Thanks Cheri, I’m obsessed with my big silicone ice cube mold 🙂
