What to Eat Now: Figs

The BEST fig recipes to make right now ~ eating seasonally is a joy, especially when what’s in season are luscious figs. Here are some creative fig recipes for Black Mission, Calimyrna, Brown Turkey, Kadota, and Adriatic figs!

Once you taste a fresh fig, there’s no going back. Only trouble is, these special Mediterranean fruits are only around for a ridiculously short time. They’re technically in season from June through October, but you’re most likely to see them in your supermarket in late summer, early fall. There are hundreds of varieties, but you’ll probably only encounter a few of them. I find you can pretty much use them interchangeably in fig recipes…

• Black Mission are my favorites, they have a deep dark purple skin and a stunning blush interior. The flavor is the best of all the figs, so keep an eye out for them.
• Kadota have spring green skins and pretty deep pink interiors.
• Brown Turkey have brownish purple skins with pin interiors.
• Calimyrna are pale green with rust colored flesh.
