It’s my birthday, and I’ve got birthday cakes on the brain! Everybody’s got their own idea about what makes a cake a birthday cake, but first and foremost, it has to be homemade. Here are some of my favorite birthday cake recipes to celebrate that special day, homestyle!

…let’s see, for me, a birthday cake absolutely has to have layers, at least two. But it shouldn’t be too fancy, it should look homemade because the best cakes are the ones we pull out of our own ovens. My mom always made chocolate (Duncan Hines) with her own vanilla buttercream, and it sat on a dinner plate on the counter looking like a million bucks.

Ooh, these all look so good! Happy Birthday… what would be your pick of the lot? My kids always ask for something fruit-flavored, and for my almost-5-year-old’s birthday next month, I already had that Strawberry Cake pinned (along with a couple bags of freeze-dried strawberries for the frosting).
