“We made this Hummer cocktail all last summer, itโs amazing.” ~Tavo

The Hummer Cocktail is a mid-century ice cream cocktail made with coffee ice cream, rum, and Kahlua…you’ll either love me or hate me for thisย irresistible concoction, it’s a seriously delicious adult treat!
what’s a hummer?
The original Hummer is an ice cream cocktail thought to be born in Detroit at the Bayview Yacht Club in the 1960s. It’s responsible for starting a cocktail milkshake craze that peaked in the 60s but is still going strong, at least in our house.
The original recipe calls for vanilla ice cream, light rum, and Kahlua. I’ve made a few choice tweaks that absolutely make it better.
what you’ll need for a hummer cocktail
- coffee ice cream ~ go for the good stuff. I use coffee ice cream because it’s my favorite. It deepens the flavor of this classic ice cream cocktail. You can use chocolate, too, or butter pecan!
- rum ~ I use amber rum, another little tweak for more depth of flavor.
- Kahlua coffee liqueur
- ice ~ just a little to thicken the drink and keep the temperature nice and frosty. I use crushed ice.
- a blender to make the magic happen.
the hummer cocktail is a summer favorite
This is the perfect way to end a summer day, and I guarantee if you make a pitcher up for your friends they will never let you forget it. It’s going to be your signature cocktail, for sure.
Interestingly the hummer cocktail faded from view after its brief burst of fame in the last century. It’s largely been blogs like mine that have kept it alive. I first posted about it in 2012 and I’ve been singing its praises ever since. You have got to try this one!!

Definitely love! I really like espresso martinis and these sound even better – creamier and more dessert like! Yum!
Never heard of espresso martinis…so many drinks, so little time…
Oh, golly…love.love. I have to crawl out from under my rock and say that I had never heard of a “Hummer”. What would I do without bloggers to expand my world!!
So the D invented a cocktail. What do you know? I think I’d LOVE. I just bought Haagen Daas coffee ice cream the other because it only has 5 ingredients, all of which are real. I was impressed!
I have a feeling every one of the Haagen Daas flavors would be great in this, I think I’ll experiment, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!
Haagen dazs vanilla. They were great. I enjoy one at bayview yacht club. I hope they invented them.
The D actually invented another cocktail, called “The Last Word.” We don’t just make cars here…we like to drink, too!
Mmmm, sounds like pure LOVE to me
Oh wow, this looks so yummy. I love coffee ice cream too and would definitely use it. I bet they go down very easy.
This looks evil and I could totally fall in love with it! YUM!
That looks so delicious! My ex-husband used to make what he called a grown-up chocolate milk shake with Kahlua, chocolate liquor, Frangellico, and a touch of cream. We would beg for them every summer! I like yours a bit better because of the ice cream. I just may have to try it with both coffee and chocolate. ๐
That sounds really good, but I agree, add some ice cream! Actually I was planning to make a ‘Nutty Irishman’ version of this, with Frangelico and Bailey’s.
Well, I have never heard of a hummer cocktail, and I just so happen to have a quarter bottle of kahlua left over from the winter holidays…I think I may know what I’m doing this weekend! ๐
How about I love to hate you for this – just kidding! Why are there two straws? What makes you think I would share this? Sounds pretty darn delicious to me. I had never heard of this but now that I have – it is stuck in the file drawer of my brain for a time when I NEED it.
Hi Sue. I have never heard of a hummer cocktail (nice name BTW), but I like the looks of this one so put me down for LOVE. This looks great and something I would definitely share with my hubby, so 2 straws please.
