10 Fall Soup and Bread Pairings

fall soup and bread pairings: split pea soup with Dutch oven bread.

Cozy fall soup and bread pairings match our favorite soups to easy breads, rolls, and biscuits for the most comforting meals ever.

I live for cozy fall nights, a bowl of soup, and a homemade bread, biscuit, or roll alongside it. Life doesn’t get any better and dinner doesn’t get any easier. I’ve collected a few perfect soup and bread pairings to inspire you, but don’t be afraid to mix and match!

How do I choose what bread goes with what soup?

It’s not an exact science, but I usually try to stay within a theme when I match a soup to a bread. That theme could be a type of cuisine, like pairing my German potato and brat soup with a beer bread. Or it could be an ingredient that connects my pairing, like serving cornmeal biscuits or cornbread with my Native American three sisters soup. Sometimes it’s just a matter of practicality ~ if I’ve spent a lot of time on my Beef Barley Soup I might want to rely on something quick and easy on the side, like maybe an Irish Soda Bread.

THREE SISTERS SOUP + CORNMEAL BISCUITS

A Native American soup made with corn, squash and beans is quintessential fall fare. Make it vegan or add chicken for even more protein. We love it with cornmeal biscuits, of course.

GERMAN POTATO AND BRAT SOUP + BEER BREAD

Perfect for Octoberfest, my German soup is so satisfying with chunky potatoes and brats. Easy beer bread is the obvious companion.

FINNISH SALMON SOUP + BUCKWHEAT HONEY CARAWAY ROLLS

This Nordic classic is a regular in our house, and so many of you love it too. We make it a meal with caraway rolls and there are never any leftovers.

CORN AND JALAPENO CHOWDER + PUMPKIN CORNBREAD MUFFINS

Corn chowder is possibly my favorite soup, I’ve been making it since college days and I love it all year round. Pumpkin cornbread muffins are the best companion for fall.

ITALIAN WHITE BEAN AND SAUSAGE SOUP + ROSEMARY AND OLIVE FOCACCIA BREAD

A classic Italian soup demands a classic Italian bread, and this white bean and sausage soup feels right at home with my easy no knead focaccia.

BEEF BARLEY SOUP + IRISH OATMEAL SODA BREAD

Beef barley soup has been comforting me since I was a kid, but back then it was from a can! My homemade version is incredible, but even better with a thick slice of warm Irish soda bread.

MUSHROOM BRIE SOUP + 3 INGREDIENT BISCUITS

Opposites attract and this old saw holds true for soup and bread pairings, too! Mushroom and Brie soup is ultra luxe, so I serve it with homey 3 ingredient biscuits for a perfect marriage.

SPLIT PEA SOUP + DUTCH OVEN BREAD

Split pea soup with ham is hearty enough to be a meal on its own, but don’t let that stop you from serving it with a rustic Dutch oven bread. You can toast the leftovers for tomorrow’s breakfast.

STUFFED PEPPER SOUP + CRUSTY ANADAMA ROLLS

Homey stuffed pepper soup is a family fave, and it goes so well with old fashioned anadama rolls. Cornmeal and a touch of molasses make them super delish.

LEMONY CHICKEN SOUP + HAWAIIAN ROLLS

The best chicken soup is always a favorite for dinner, but we up the comfort factor with soft pillowy Hawaiian rolls.

I have tried a few of your recipes before and really enjoyed them. I so look forward to attempting the soups and the bread types. Do not have a good beef barley or a split pea with ham. Sounds so delectable. Bring on the new season I am ready for the challenge.
    Happy eating.
