Every great soup deserves the right bread. I’ve paired my favorite soups with the breads, biscuits, rolls, and cornbreads that turn them into an amazing meal.

Don't Lose This Recipe!
I live for cozy nights, a bowl of soup, and a homemade bread, biscuit, or roll alongside it. Life doesn’t get any better and dinner doesn’t get any easier. I’ve collected my best soup and bread pairings to inspire you, but don’t be afraid to mix and match!
Why pair soup and bread?
A great soup will fill you up, but it doesn’t always feel like a complete meal. Bread brings the carbs, the chew, and something to tear, hold, and dip ~ all the things that make a bowl of soup feel more substantial and satisfying.
How do I choose my soup and bread pairings?
It’s not an exact science, but I usually try to stay within a theme when I match a soup to a bread.
- CUISINE: That theme could be a type of cuisine, like pairing my German potato and brat soup with a beer bread.
- INGREDIENTS: Or it could be an ingredient that connects my pairing, like serving cornmeal biscuits or cornbread with my Native American three sisters soup.
- CONTRAST or SIMILARITY: I might pair a chunky soup with a smooth roll, or a pureed soup with a crusty bread.
- PRACTICALITY: Sometimes it’s just a matter of practicality ~ if I’ve spent a lot of time on my Beef Barley Soup I might want to rely on something quick and easy on the side, like maybe an Irish Soda Bread.

THREE SISTERS SOUP + CORNMEAL BISCUITS
A Native American soup made with corn, squash and beans is quintessential fall fare. Make it vegan or add chicken for even more protein. Cornmeal biscuits are the obvious partner here ~ they carry the corn theme from the soup right through the meal (also try Masa Harina Biscuits.)

LEMONY TUSCAN ARTICHOKE SOUP + TOMATO AND OLIVE FOCACCIA
This fan fave Tuscan soup is light and satisfying paired with a classic Sicilian bread studded with tomatoes and olives ~ it’s a celebration of Mediterranean flavors.

ROASTED PARSNIP SOUP + QUICK DINNER ROLLS
A simple buttery dinner roll is the perfect companion to the bold, savory flavors in my roasted parsnip soup with garlic and blue cheese.

HUNGARIAN MUSHROOM SOUP + SOUR CREAM & ONION BISCUITS
Tangy sour cream is the through-line here! The soup broth is enriched with sour cream and it’s baked right in to these tender biscuits. This super flavorful pairing is guaranteed to get compliments.

GERMAN POTATO AND BRAT SOUP + BEER BREAD
A soup and bread meal is perfect for Octoberfest. My German soup is so satisfying with chunky potatoes and brats, and easy beer bread is the obvious companion.

FINNISH SALMON SOUP + BUCKWHEAT HONEY CARAWAY ROLLS
This Nordic classic is a regular in our house, and so many of you love it too. The caraway in the rolls keeps this pairing firmly in a Nordic lane, which makes them a natural match for Finnish salmon soup. There are never any leftovers.

CORN & CHEDDAR CHEESE CHOWDER + HONEY WHEATBERRY BREAD
Two 70s era classics pair up for the perfect cozy fall meal.

CORN AND JALAPENO CHOWDER + PUMPKIN CORNBREAD MUFFINS
Corn chowder is possibly my favorite soup, I’ve been making it since college days and I love it all year round. Pumpkin cornbread muffins make this an ideal soup and bread combo for fall.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP + IRISH CHEDDAR SODA BREAD
I love the subtle contrast between a refined, smooth soup like this butternut squash soup and the rustic texture of a homemade Irish soda bread.

ITALIAN WHITE BEAN AND SAUSAGE SOUP + ROSEMARY AND OLIVE FOCACCIA BREAD
A classic Italian soup demands a classic Italian bread, and this white bean and sausage soup feels right at home with my easy no knead focaccia. They even echo each other visually!

BEEF BARLEY SOUP + IRISH OATMEAL SODA BREAD
Beef barley soup has been comforting me since I was a kid, but back then it was from a can! My homemade version is incredible, but even better with a thick slice of warm Irish soda bread.

CREAMY WILD RICE SOUP + GARLIC BREAD BISCUITS
Double down on the comfort-factor by pairing this creamy wild rice soup with extra-buttery garlic bread biscuits!

MUSHROOM BRIE SOUP + 3 INGREDIENT BISCUITS
Opposites attract and this old saw holds true for soup and bread pairings, too! Mushroom and Brie soup is ultra luxe, so I serve it with homey (and simple!) 3 ingredient biscuits for a perfect marriage.

SPLIT PEA SOUP + DUTCH OVEN BREAD
Split pea soup with ham is hearty enough to be a meal on its own, but don’t let that stop you from serving it with a rustic Dutch oven bread. You can toast the leftovers for tomorrow’s breakfast.

STUFFED PEPPER SOUP + QUICK DINNER ROLLS
Homey stuffed pepper soup is a family fave, and it goes so well with my super quick dinner roll recipe ~ everybody leaves the table satisfied.

LEMONY CHICKEN SOUP + HAWAIIAN ROLLS
The best chicken soup is always a favorite for dinner, but we up the comfort factor with soft pillowy Hawaiian rolls. This pairing is a guaranteed kid pleaser!

ASPARAGUS BISQUE + HOMEMADE CROUTONS
A simple creamy asparagus soup just begs for big chunky homemade croutons!

SMOKED SALMON CHOWDER + CORN STICKS
Smokey salmon chowder with crisp and tender cornbread sticks is a quick soup and bread meal with tons of flavor! The corn sticks would go with any of my many chowder recipes.

TOMATO SOUP + GARLIC KNOTS
Garlic is the uniting factor in this soup and bread match-up: fire roasted tomato soup paired with the butteriest garlic knots ever!

FRENCH GARLIC SOUP + ROSEMARY BISCUITS
A sunny Mediterranean soup and bread team featuring a unique soup from the Lautrec region of France alongside biscuits laced with aromatic rosemary.

NEW ENGLAND FISH CHOWDER + CRANBERRY PUMPKIN ROLLS
A cozy combo that brings together the flavors of a New England fall.

MISO SOUP + SCALLION PANCAKES
Simple nourishing miso soup with light and crispy spring onion pancakes make a spring-forward soup and bread pairing!

CREAMY ARTICHOKE BISQUE + PUMPERNICKEL BISCUITS
A rich silky artichoke bisque plays well with the earthy layered flavors in my pumpernickel biscuits, it’s a winning combination for a chilly night.

TUSCAN TORTELLINI SOUP + SAGE FOCACCIA
My mouth waters just looking at this hearty meal! Cheesy tortellini and crumbled sausage in a lemony broth paired with a crusty herbed focaccia ~ what’s not to love??

PUMPKIN CHIPOTLE BISQUE + MOLASSES CORNBREAD
This is a rich and unexpected combination that celebrates the best of fall ~ everyone is going to ask for these recipes!

BROCCOLI STILTON SOUP + MUSHROOM GRUYERE BRUSCHETTA
An elegant cheesy pairing that looks as gorgeous as it tastes.

ROMANIAN BACON SOUP + BUCKWHEAT BISCUITS
Buckwheat has deep roots in Eastern European cooking, so these hearty rolls feel right at home alongside my Romanian bacon soup. This soup and bread combo will warm up your blusteriest days!

GREEK AVGOLEMONO + HONEY WHEAT BERRY ROLLS
A bright Mediterranean lemon and chicken soup is made creamy without any dairy. It goes nicely with my 70s era crusty rolls.

WHITE BEAN & BACON + IRISH YELLOWMEAL SODA BREAD
This hearty pairing is more of an intuitive match than anything else. The ease of soda bread is always welcome and this dense cornmeal version plays well with the brothy bean soup.

I love these ideas and recipes…What about Boston Baked Bread – what soup would you pair that with?
Thanks, Cheryl! Since Boston brown bread has such a rich flavor, I would pair it with something cozy and bold enough to stand up to it, like my beef & barley soup, roasted winter vegetable soup, or split pea soup with ham. Happy cooking!
Can you please tell me where I can find the recipe for the seeded muffin or bread in the second picture of split pea soup? Looks like it might have caraway or cumin seeds o top.
I’m going to make the pot of split pea soup today- it looks too good to wait
Hi Winnie ~ those are my pumpernickel biscuits.
I wanted to copy the link to the rosemary biscuits but there is no link. Then I tried to do a search for them but the search option isn’t working. Would love the link! Thank you! 😀
Sorry about that Lynn, I just fixed the link in the post, and here they are: rosemary biscuits.
Woo-hoo! Thanks so much! 🥰
